If you've ever pin traded at the park you've probably picked up a few 'scrapper' or 'fake' pins, if you don't know what those are just jump to item 3. and here are a few tips on how to distinguish them (1), avoid them (2) and how to make sure you don't get scammed (4).
1. Fake pins are mainly off colored, they have a certain tint to them that makes them seem off. They can also be WAY worse quality, Disney Pins are pretty god quality, but these have scratches and can be bendy at times, and are even known to fall apart as soon as you wear it in the sun!
2. to make sure you don't get scammed, I recommend to never EVER buy pin lots on eBay. they come at about 15-20 for about 40-100, and i can assure you that they are 100% fake, if you are buying pins that get below 2 dollars per pin on eBay, I wouldn't by them at all. well, you can buy them just don't trade them in the parks, because someone might end up getting your bad pins.
3. fake pins are pins made illegally without Disney's permission, sometimes molds are stolen, or they are just very easy to duplicate but if you just look at the pins closely you'll be able to tell if they are off colored.
4. the main way to not get scammed is to only buy from reliable people, If you but from a reliable source or somebody you know, chances are you won't get scammed. If you trade inside Facebook groups, that are usually private, the moderators will make sure that you don't get scammed. but in the rare occasion you do tell them and they'll handle it.
